Sometimes She Amazes Me

In wrapping up the end of her 3rd grade year, my 8 year old daughter was asked to pick a historical figure of her choice, and do a report on why they are important and how they made a difference. Listed as examples on the paper were several presidents, inventors, etc.

Gabrielle decided she wanted to do hers on Martin Luther King Jr.

I don’t know how to describe the conviction in her eyes as she talked about how important it is that everyone is treated the same, no matter what color they are. We talked about the attitudes back then, about slavery, about the church bombings, and the Ku Klux Klan, and how he was eventually assassinated. Heavy stuff for an almost 9 year old, but she understood and it only served to reinforce how wrong it all was.

As much as Brendan sometimes makes me feel like I have no grasp on this parenting stuff, sometimes she allows me to feel like maybe, just maybe I might be doing something right.

  1. You’ve done well. Compassion is not something you can teach by talking, only by example. And brace yourself…. she’ll probably challenge you more as she gets older – with those brains!
