I thought when I got up this morning I would be blogging about the little problem I had with my van the other day. However as I started checking in with my boards, a friend notified us of an issue over at another blog that is worth passing along.

It seems the pork industry has gotten its hackles up over a mommy blog called The Lactivist. For those that don’t know, its a wonderful blog that promotes breastfeeding through fund raising and awareness pieces. One of the fundraising methods is through tshirts she designs and sells through Cafepress, with awesome slogans like “Thats my baby’s lunch you’re staring at”. One of the tshirt slogans is “The Other White Milk”. The pork people are claiming this is trademark infringement, and sent her a cease and desist notification from their lawyer. Yes, the pork people are threatening to sue a breastfeeding blog.

I seriously can’t wrap my mind around this. So what do they think happens when someone sees this shirt? Do they confuse the word ‘milk’ for ‘pork’? Do they wonder if she has porkchops stuffed in her bra? The only way I could *possibly* see this causing any issue to the pork industry is if the man turns to his wife and says “Don’t bother defrosting the ham tonight, I’d rather have the baby’s dinner.”

Which brings us to the most absurd part of this whole situation. Ponder for a moment if you will the following quote from the cease and desist letter received by The Lactivist. (Bolding is mine.)
“In addition, your use of this slogan also tarnishes the good reputation of the National Pork Board‘s mark in light of your apparent attempt to promote the use of breastmilk beyond merely for infant consumption, such as with the following slogans on your website in close proximity to the slogan “The Other White Milk.” “Dairy Diva,” “Nursing, Nature’s Own Breast Enhancement,” “Eat at Mom’s, fast-fresh-from the breast,” and “My Milk is the Breast.”

Apparently they are trying to claim The Lactivist is a fetish site. The site that promotes breastfeeding, the site that covers news relating to women’s rights to nurse in public, the site that raised and donated thousands of dollars for a milk bank. A fetish site. PLEASE.

I hope a media outlet does decide to cover this story, and I hope the pork people get eaten alive for it. No pun intended.

I was just totally shocked when I read about this. Especially the part about promoting breastfeeding for more than infant consumption!?! Hope all the bloggers out there can change the NPB’s mind and end this silly lawsuit.

They seriously need to get a life. Some men cooped up in a boardroom thought of this one, and it is outright absurd!

What a bunch of bullshit! I think those men weren’t breastfeed and they have been fucked up every since.

It must be the people who think breast feeding is gross in someway that came up with this..like the people who don’t want to see women breast feeding theirs babies in public those type of people..I cant see people who are for breast feeding and see no prob in it being that way.
I think if I was a judge dealing with that case I would laugh and throw the people out of court ( the ones who are making a big fuss about breast feeding)

That is absurd! Last I checked, pork and breastmilk were not easily confused. I can’t believe they would think that it is a fetish sight. Those men need lives.

This stuff just makes my blood boil. It’s ridiculous stupidity at it’s worst. I just don’t understand all of this backlash at breastfeeding education. Are there that many close minded people out there? I’ll be rethinking my options the next time I go to buy pork for a while.
